Details have been released concerning Richard Ayoade’s latest film ‘Double’, his second outing as a director. Based on a novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the film will follow a character by the name of Simon whose life is turned upside down when his exact doppelganger, a man named James, starts working at the same firm as him. James is charismatic and good with the ladies – everything Simon is not – and it is not long before he starts to feel as though James is taking over his own life.
Already signed up to the cast list was ‘Zombieland’/’The Social Network’ star Jesse Eisenberg, but he is now joined by several other names. Mia Wasikowska (‘Alice in Wonderland’), Yasmin Paige (‘Ballet Shoes’), and Noah Taylor (‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’) have now been confirmed as signed up to the project. Paige and Taylor both previously starred in Ayoade’s debut, ‘Submarine’, so it looks like a return to familiar territory for the director. James Fox and Wallace Shawn have also been announced in supporting roles. Filming will begin very soon, with 20th May set as the start date, although there is no word on a predicted release date as yet.
Funny man Ayoade, 34, has previously been known for his own roles in comedy shows ‘The Mighty Boosh’ and ‘The IT Crowd’, but is now carving a new niche for himself. There was a certain amount of buzz generated over ‘Submarine’, with a number of celebrity endorsements, and it looks as if ‘Double’ may be something to get excited over as well. Rather than taking the original setting of Dostoyevsky’s work, the film script has been updated to modern times, so while we won’t expect period costumes there just might be something very marketable in this movie. It will be interesting to see Eisenberg move away from his trademark awkward nerd role and into a more dangerous, charismatic character – our advice is, watch this space.
