Reports coming from Los Angeles today speak of a “restrained” host in the form of Ricky Gervais, a stark contrast from the controversy of the 2010 Golden Globe Awards in which Ricky’s performance was described as “mean-spirited and mildly sinister” by actors and members of the press alike. The overall ceremony has been called “lifeless” by US entertainment magazine Variety, with The Hollywood Reporter citing similar disappointment, describing the awards as “a let down” without any hint of spontaneity.

Meanwhile, silent black and white picture The Artist was the winner of three gongs, earning them for best score, best comedy, and best lead actor (Jean Dujardin) respectively. Two best actress awards were presented to Meryl Streep for her performance in The Iron Lady, and to Michelle Williams for My Week with Marilyn. The prize for best film drama went to The Descendants, with the gong for best actor going to George Clooney for his stellar performance.
