American Pie

American Pie is a teen comedy written by Adam Herz and directed by the Weitz brothers (Paul & Chris), this was the Weitz brothers first feature film, and they have since gone on to direct Hugh Grant in “About a Boy”. The film hosts what is now considered an all star cast including Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Seann William Scott, Shannon Elizabeth, Tara Reid, Alyson Hannigan and Eugene Levy.

The majority of the cast were pretty much unknown before starring in American Pie. The film has since spawned two direct sequels and a further two spin-off films, and is often considered one of the best comedy films of all time. American Pie has gone on to gross approximately $235,483,004 worldwide, and the film credited Don McLean for allowing use of the title of his song for the title of this film.

Jim, Kevin, Finch and Oz are high school seniors and best friends, at friend Stifler’s house party they all come to the conclusion that losing their virginities is going to be a harder task than they initially assumed. So they make a “pact” to all have sex before graduation, leaving prom their last good opportunity to “get laid”. So the film follows them as they make failed attempts on unlucky ladies, with hilarious consequences.

Kevin seeks out an infamous sex bible that has been a secret of the school for generations, Finch pays someone to give him a reputation out of sheer desperation, Oz joins the choir to seduce the sheltered females and Jim practices his smooth moves on an apple pie. When the inevitable day comes it appears that nothing has changed and they’re all in the same boat as they were before the pact was initiated, however appearances are deceiving and it soon becomes apparent that determination and dedication can go a long way, of course charm and charisma with the ladies helps.

American Pie is a hilarious twist on teenage life and the pressure that society places on young virgins. The film catapulted some of the lead cast to stardom and remains one of the funniest films ever made, and has entered the top twenty of such surveys on a regular basis. The film is often remembered for Jim’s encounter with an apple pie, and Shannon Elizabeth’s topless scene. However the character of Steve Stifler played by Seann William Scott not only put the actor on the Hollywood map, but also was an extra hidden gem in the series being funnier and wackier with each film he was in.

The soundtrack to American Pie was great and every actor performed excellently, which is a very rare yet welcome surprise. The film remains one of my favourite comedies and will undoubtedly be a classic of the genre for years to come.
