Remember Mel Gibson? Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, Academy Award winner in 1995 for Braveheart. Unfortunately the press dubbed ‘Mad Mel’ has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons in the last few years, but having been a big fan I jumped at the chance to rent ‘How I Spent My Summer Vacation’.
The film begins with Gibson dressed as a clown driving a car with another clown bleeding to death in the back seat alongside a pile of money, hot in pursuit are the police and explosive car chase is the first thing viewers are thrown into. A good start to any movie, I think we can all agree.
After a daring stunt, Gibson lands the car over the Mexican border, meaning the Mexican police have jurisdiction and he’s thrown into the most obscure prison he’s ever been in. More of a village than a prison, drugs, alcohol and money all change hands freely, being a thief Mad Mel does what he does best and steals his way to survival. A gripping thriller unfolds as the Mexican in charge of the prison is keeping a young boy safe in order to have his liver when needed.
Mel Gibson is fantastic in How I Spent My Summer Vacation, having to not only think if himself, but also protect the boy and his mother, and somehow escape. Definitely one to watch!
