British film-maker Guy Ritchie (who incidentally, is currently married to Madonna) made it big in 1998 with “Lock, Stock and two Smoking Barrels” his next film two years later “Snatch” was easily as good. It has a great cast (who all do there parts very well) and the style of filming Guy has is great, both Lock, Stock and Snatch are “English Gangster” movies.
We are introduced to a whole host of characters at the beginning of the film, all of which end up being connected somehow by a priceless stolen diamond. The characters include dodgy boxing promoters, violent bookies, an invincible Russian, idiotic thieves, pikeys and “Jewish” jewellers. With great violence, dark humour, great characters and a great plot it was a joy to watch. The cast includes Jason Statham, Brad Pitt, Vinnie Jones, Mike Reid and Benicio Del Toro.
Personally I prefer the “Italian American” mafia type of gangster film as opposed to cockney hard-ons, but I really did enjoy Snatch none the less, as I did Lock Stock and Layer Cake.
